How should you formulate a research question?

Formulating a good research question is the key to effective research. After establishing what they already know about their topics and what they would like to learn about them, your students will need to select the main question to guide their research as well as secondary questions. To do so, they can expand upon what came up in the activity to activate their prior knowledge.

Learning to formulate questions begins in Elementary Cycle 3 with the teacher’s help. Students in Secondary Cycle 2 should be able to formulate research questions more independently.

It's now time to formulate your main inquiry question as well as your secondary questions. Look at the information you wrote down in your brainstorm to guide you. Don't forget to formulate a question that can't easily be answered in one or two sentences to make it more relevant.
